But, now, it\u2019s written on T-shirts in every high-<\/strong><strong>street store you pass.<\/strong> So why the U-turn? I would hope that it\u2019s the first option, but that seems less likely looking at these facts:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onepoll.com\/36-of-british-adults-define-themselves-as-feminist-yet-76-support-gender-equality\/\">36% of British adults<\/a> define themselves as feminist yet 76% support gender equality as of 2017<\/li>\n<li>Only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/04\/16\/feminism-poll_n_3094917.html\">20% of Americans<\/a> consider themselves feminist<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Which probably comes down to the fact that the definition of the \u2018F-word\u2019 is misunderstood.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFeminism has had exactly the same problem that &#8220;political correctness&#8221; has had: people keep using the phrase without really knowing what it means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2015<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/939363.Caitlin_Moran\"> Caitlin Moran<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/work\/quotes\/15507935\"> How to Be a Woman<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Dior: Feminism, a Clever Marketing Trick?<\/h3>\n<p>We should be jumping for joy that a designer like Dior is celebrating feminism\u2026 Yet, why is this excitement just coming out as confusion? I check the website and it\u2019s retailing for \u00a3490 (I was expecting it to be expensive, but woah), however, that isn\u2019t the disappointing thing.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-804\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-08-at-19.40.21-300x78.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"88\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-08-at-19.40.21-300x78.png 300w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-08-at-19.40.21-768x200.png 768w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-08-at-19.40.21.png 822w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/>The disappointing thing is the lack of information and lack of credit to whom it owes its slogan: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. There is NOTHING. ZERO. It\u2019s a missed opportunity &#8211; why wouldn\u2019t they celebrate a woman who\u2019s as inspiring as her? Yes, she sat front row at Dior&#8217;s show, but that&#8217;s as much reference there is.<\/p>\n<p>(<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-808\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Chimamanda-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"371\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Chimamanda-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Chimamanda-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Chimamanda-1029x772.png 1029w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 371px) 100vw, 371px\" \/>If you haven\u2019t listened to her speech, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hg3umXU_qWc\">then watch it here<\/a> &#8211; it\u2019s a perfect summary of what feminism is. I also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/We-Should-All-Be-Feminists\/dp\/0008115273\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1494531607&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=we+should+all+be+feminists\">got the mini book<\/a> &#8211; it only takes about 20 minutes to read and it&#8217;s a cute bed-side table book).<\/p>\n<p>And then I\u2019m annoyed that it doesn\u2019t reference anything apart from what it\u2019s made from. Nothing about raising awareness for gender equality. Nothing about supporting female charities. At this steep price some proceeds must go to a charity?<\/p>\n<p>Well, it turns out it does. A \u2018portion of the sale&#8217; will benefit Rihanna&#8217;s charity <a href=\"https:\/\/claralionelfoundation.org\">Clara Lionel Foundation<\/a> (no mention of what percentage). But I only find this out by digging through the internet. Maybe they made this announcement as an afterthought to dampen the criticism they received&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So, some part of the profit of this T-shirt will go to charity, but how much is not specified. It could be 1% or 100%; but what I&#8217;m willing to bet is that it leaves Dior with a hefty profit.<\/p>\n<p>This lack of information makes Dior seem so <strong>non-committal<\/strong> to the feminist movement that it just seems like a <strong>marketing tactic<\/strong>. And its clearly working, as its now sold out worldwide and high-street retailers like Topshop and River Island are following suit&#8230; as are consumers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhat does [this Dior T-shirt] say about the person wearing it other than: \u2018I can afford a $600 T-shirt\u2019? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/feminism\">Feminism<\/a> has been entirely co-opted by consumerism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/apr\/23\/jessa-crispin-todays-feminists-are-bland-shallow-and-lazy\">-Jessa Crispin<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When I saw this tee on the catwalk, I loved it, because <strong>I love the quote, Chimamanda&#8217;s speech<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IyuUWOnS9BY\">Beyonc\u00e9&#8217;s song<\/a> where part of her speech is sampled&#8230; and I wanted it. (So I guess their marketing <em>has<\/em> manipulated me too!) So that&#8217;s why I decided to dig deeper.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-791\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Feminist.png\" alt=\"Hannah in 'We Should All Be Feminists T-Shirt'\" width=\"700\" height=\"1053\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So I made a stand and got a copy from Etsy for a \u00a312 which is 98% cheaper (lol) than the Dior and then <strong>donated 100%<\/strong> of what I paid for it to a feminist charity: <a href=\"https:\/\/fawcettsocietyshop.com\">The Fawcett Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Just a disclaimer<\/em>: I don\u2019t usually advocate buying fake luxury items and I&#8217;m not going to pretend this top&#8217;s <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-828 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Females-of-the-future-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/>real Dior, but in this case, we&#8217;re all winners, because:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A <strong>charity received a donation<\/strong> and I actually <em>know<\/em> how much was donated<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>local small-company<\/strong> in London got some business<\/li>\n<li>It prompted me and maybe another person to <strong>think about <\/strong><b>this feminism &#8216;trend&#8217;<\/b><\/li>\n<li>I get a T-shirt with the quote on : )<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/fawcettsocietyshop.com\/collections\/donations\">If you want to<strong> donate<\/strong> too you can here<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>This top\u00a0was one of the only pieces from Maria Grazia Chiuri&#8217;s debut collection for Dior that I liked. And it&#8217;s a plain cotton T-shirt with someone else&#8217;s quote on it, so that says it all! But that&#8217;s another matter. As its first ever female Creative Director in the Fashion House&#8217;s whole history, you would&#8217;ve thought that she could&#8217;ve made a really big feminist statement and taken it a lot further than just this one piece in the collection.<\/p>\n<p>But, <strong>does it really matter <\/strong>whether the motivations were in no way altruistic or informative?<\/p>\n<p><em>At the end of it all, the high-street is following and people are wearing the word &#8216;feminism&#8217; more than ever.<\/em> Whether it&#8217;s because it&#8217;s a statement they believe in or they&#8217;re following a trend, it must be heading in the right direction. <strong>All publicity is good publicity, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;Feminist&#8217; Fashion done the best way<\/h3>\n<p>This brings me to Elle Magazine&#8217;s campaign <em>This is What A Feminist Looks Like from<\/em> their 2014 December issue &#8211; their first &#8216;Feminism edition&#8217; on which Emma Watson covered.<\/p>\n<p>Their T-shirts, worn by nearly every celebrity you can think of, female <em>and male<\/em>, had a clear purpose of raising awareness&#8230; and they donated <em>all <\/em>the profits.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>100% of profits from the ethically-produced range go to gender equality lobby group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fawcettsociety.org.uk\">The Fawcett Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elleuk.com\/fashion\/news\/a23463\/buy-elle-whistles-fawcwett-feminism-unisex-tshirt\/\">-Elle<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fawcettsocietyshop.com\/collections\/t-shirt\">A version of this T-shirt is still available on the Fawcett Society website.<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elleuk.com\/fashion\/news\/a23463\/buy-elle-whistles-fawcwett-feminism-unisex-tshirt\/\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-818\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/An-Activist-Is-Born.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/An-Activist-Is-Born.png 900w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/An-Activist-Is-Born-300x205.png 300w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/An-Activist-Is-Born-768x525.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/what-a-feminist-looks-like.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/what-a-feminist-looks-like.png 1100w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/what-a-feminist-looks-like-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/what-a-feminist-looks-like-768x510.png 768w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/what-a-feminist-looks-like-1029x684.png 1029w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>So, <em>is<\/em> Feminism a trend?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes. It is. But, it&#8217;s not<em> just<\/em> a trend. Slogans will always be a thing in fashion. Right now, it&#8217;s a statement about female empowerment. But, feminism being a fashion trend isn&#8217;t a bad thing. It&#8217;s starting to open up <strong>more conversations<\/strong> about it. It doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean this trend will fade away either. It might just be the <strong>push some of us need<\/strong> to stop feeling afraid of or embarrassed by the &#8216;F-word&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>And I will disagree with what some of Jessa Crispin says in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/apr\/23\/jessa-crispin-todays-feminists-are-bland-shallow-and-lazy\">article<\/a> I quoted above: that young girls who are now starting to identify as feminist are bland and lazy. If people are wanting to wear a T-shirt with the word <em>Feminist <\/em>on it, then no-one should discourage them.<\/p>\n<p>Maria Grazia Chiuri&#8217;s T-shirt wasn&#8217;t just the <strong>stand-out piece<\/strong> from this Dior collection, but from the whole of this year&#8217;s Paris Fashion Week. Regardless of my scepticism, this T-shirt alone got a global conversation going about Feminism and I think that is what we&#8217;ve been needing for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>I think this quote nicely sums up why fashion is fully on board with feminism:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen you are a woman making clothes for women, then fashion is not just about how you look. It is about how you feel and how you think. <strong>Feminism for me is about equal opportunities<\/strong>. Like, so similar that I&#8217;m surprised they got away with this being the world&#8217;s largest clothing retailer?! But at \u00a317.99 it&#8217;s a steal.
