The first time for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-44885983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their disposal of their left-over stock<\/a>. That&#8217;s another issue which I actually wanted to write about. But, this may surprise you&#8230; The second piece of news &#8211; the controversial logo change &#8211; now THAT \u00a0has triggered me more than all of Burberry&#8217;s burning clothes.<\/p>\n<p>THIS IS THE NEW BURBERRY LOGO (be prepared to be underwhelmed):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6356\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/riccardo-tisci-burberry-new-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/riccardo-tisci-burberry-new-logo.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/riccardo-tisci-burberry-new-logo-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/riccardo-tisci-burberry-new-logo-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/riccardo-tisci-burberry-new-logo-819x1024.jpg 819w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you like this new logo, then your opinion is WRONG! \ud83d\ude1b<\/p>\n<p>Let me tell you why.<\/p>\n<h2>Christopher Bailey would not have committed such a crime when he was at the helm of Burberry.<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">To me, this logo change doesn&#8217;t seem to about Burberry. <strong>It screams ego-trip. It&#8217;s a power move<\/strong> by Tisci<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What is it with new Creative Directors coming into historic brands and the\u00a0<em>first\u00a0<\/em>thing they do is rebrand? Sometimes it&#8217;s needed. Burberry could use an overhaul in some areas of their public image, but one thing it <em>did not<\/em> need is a brand new logo.<\/p>\n<p>Part of their brand identity is heritage and history. <strong>This logo<\/strong> is what translates that to me:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6355 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Burberry_logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"337\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Burberry_logo.png 337w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Burberry_logo-300x263.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My issue isn&#8217;t necessarily with Tisci trying to modernise and bring the brand into 2018. Maybe if the new logo was still a serif font I&#8217;d have less vexation.<\/p>\n<h3>The issue here is that:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>The sans-serif just is too over-simplified to translate the luxury and history that Burberry is meant to be all about. I get that many other luxury brands use serif, but there is something about this logo that&#8217;s not fitting for Burberry.<\/li>\n<li>This took four weeks to design. Come on now. Apparently, this project actually needed four months! FOUR. MONTHS. To design this&#8230; Okay then.<\/li>\n<li>Where is the creativity? It looks like a watered down version of every. other. new. logo. out there.<\/li>\n<li>Following on from this, I feel like these rebranded logos have become a meme of their own. <strong>We have Hedi Slimane changing Yves Saint Laurent<\/strong>&#8216;s beautiful script into the plain &#8216;Saint Laurent&#8217; that we have today. <strong>Raf Simmons just changed Calvin Klein&#8217;s logo<\/strong>, which was designed by\u00a0Peter Saville, who, surprise suprise, has designed this new Burberry logo. I mean, just look at how diverse he can be&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6358 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/calvin_klein_logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"365\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/calvin_klein_logo.png 904w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/calvin_klein_logo-300x196.png 300w, https:\/\/hannahgladwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/calvin_klein_logo-768x503.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/>We also have <strong>C\u00e9line, Balenciaga, Diane Von Furstenburg&#8230; (the list goes on)\u00a0<\/strong>with similar looking logos. Why do they need a monogram? We already have the iconic Burberry check. This monogram just looks like a souk&#8217;s version of Louis Vuitton and Goyard mashed together.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ThomasBurberry?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ThomasBurberry<\/a> Monogram pattern revealed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Burberry?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Burberry<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Gft6ZZm5hK\">https:\/\/t.co\/Gft6ZZm5hK<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ADe6tfcfwA\">pic.twitter.com\/ADe6tfcfwA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Burberry (@Burberry) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Burberry\/status\/1024959858637000704?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 2, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h4>[Read:\u00a0<a title=\"Five Fashion Fails: Lawsuits filed against fakes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hannahgladwin.com\/lawsuits-vs-fakes\/\">Five Fashion Fails: Lawsuits filed against fakes]<\/a><\/h4>\n<h3>If it ain&#8217;t broke..<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In his statement about taking the job [Tisci] said, \u201cI have enormous respect for Burberry\u2019s British heritage and global appeal,\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.co.uk\/article\/what-riccardo-tiscis-appointment-means-for-burberry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vogue<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Being British, Burberry is an important brand to me. 2016&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6D5IZtDCS5c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christmas campaign starring Domhnall Gleeson<\/a> as Thomas Burberry\u00a0<strong>perfectly captured<\/strong> what the brand is all about. Tisci coming in and demanding a complete rebrand within four weeks doesn&#8217;t seem to be someone who really wants to get in touch with the heart of the brand&#8217;s history. Imagine the research and archives you&#8217;d have at your disposal and the amount of time that it would really take to understand the complexities of what works and also what doesn&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a very bold move, even arrogant, to assume you know the failings and to overhaul everything when you&#8217;ve only been in post a couple of months.<\/p>\n<p>To me, this logo change doesn&#8217;t seem to about Burberry. <strong>It screams ego-trip. It&#8217;s a power move<\/strong> by Tisci who wants to show everyone that he&#8217;s the new person in charge and he can do what he wants and he&#8217;ll get all the praise for any of the publicity it gets.<\/p>\n<p>Italian designers can be brash and bold, which works for certain brands. But here, for Burberry, whose essence lies in innovative practicality &#8211; think back to the 1901 classic trench that was designed for British and French soldiers &#8211; I can&#8217;t see how Tisci is a good match. Come September, we&#8217;ll see if I&#8217;m proven wrong. I\u00a0<em>do<\/em> look forward to seeing Tisci&#8217;s first collection, however.
